Mariyan - 2013 Tamil Movie

Discordant and Flawed, yet brilliant

The extraordinary hard work and talent that the team displays is mind blowing.

Between Rahman, Mark Konnicx, Dhanush and Parvathy, there is a feverish competition to hog the limelight and then there is the director who pays attention to infinite number details and falters while trying to convert a poetry into a ballad.

Yes, Mr. Bharat Bala, this attempt of yours create of Ballad of Love, is a truly wonderful effort.

It does have gnawing gaps and holes in its narrative and does test your patience several times in the second half, and triggers derisive reactions amongst the audience.

The gifted and beautiful Parvathy, with her wonderfully expressive eyes and chiseled nose, seems to steal the thunder from Dhanush. However it is Dhanush with his extraordinary subtle variation of his Ranjhna character, surprises us with his restraiint, variations, hard work and imagination. Dhanush excels in the scene adapted from Rescue Dawn, where Christian Bale expresses his craving for a burger and combines it with a premise from Sivaji Ganesan in Muthal Mariyathai and freaks out. His imagination surfaces again when after being in incarceration, emaciated and hungry speaks to his lover in a weak tone. I wonder how that was achieved.

Well after Soodhu Kavvum, here is another effort that Tamil Film industry can be proud about.
