Aakrosh, 1980, Streaming on Youtube
There are some movies which do not feel the same, when you watch it over a period of time.
Thirty seven years later, when I watched Aakrosh, it feels not only the same, it feels infinitely better.
Watching late in the night along with my sister, in 1983, on the TV, I was scared watching the movie. Watching in stark daylight after nearly four decades, it is as scary as every. This taut and suspenseful narration culminates in a stunning climax.
It is probably the best political thriller ever made.
Set in a small lazy village, you just wonder how the systemic malignancy has set in modern India as early as the late seventies.
Govind Nihalani's work is extremely important. He not only made Aakrosh, but also made Ardh Sathya, Tamas( The teleserial is available as Five hour 11 minutes film on Youtube) and Drohkaal among other films. I have seen KurudhiPunal (Drohkaal) in Tamil, which gave you the creeps in ample measure as well.
Written by Vijay Tendulkar and Satyadev Dubey, this is brilliantly shot with a perfect backgorund score by Ajit Varman.
Naseeruddin Shah, the intimidated lawyer with a clear conscience bravely fighting the system is terrific and so is Om Puri with intense eyes and silence.
This is a perfect treat for Cinema lovers
